About Us

We're building a digital future for surgeons

Despite the immense skills of modern surgeons, sharing new surgical techniques throughout the world still remains a major challenge. Surgeons often work in small, isolated teams, and their groundbreaking methods can take years to reach other parts of the world. This problem is worsened by the fact that most surgical training happens one-to-one in person, making it hard for many, especially in low and middle-income countries (LMICs), to access and share specialized knowledge.

Innovation happens everywhere, and our goal is to make sure that new surgical techniques are made available to everyone who needs them. Among the millions of hours of endoscopic surgical video content captured to-date, the vast majority of it goes unwatched and unutilized. By harnessing advancements in artificial intelligence, computer vision, and machine learning, we at SDSC aim to analyze this data at scale to become the trusted global hub for surgical data.in doing so, we will:

Bridging the gap between surgical practice and machine learning technology can't be done by describe and evaluate should not be bolded stakeholders including engineers, scientists, and clinicians.

That’s why we named ourselves Surgical Data Science Collective; our work demands a substantial collaborative effort to fully realize this mission. If our work resonates with you, we invite you to review our open job listings, as well as our Community page, to discover the myriad ways in which we might begin building a professional relationship. Help us revolutionize the distribution of surgical knowledge, and create a lasting positive impact on global health. Together, we can ensure that cutting-edge surgical innovations and training reaches every corner of the world.

About Us

Why We Choose to Be a Non-Profit Organization

Focus on Impact

Markets channel Al development towards hospital operations and admin functions to maximize profits. Meanwhile, the surgical Al systems that do exist are often bundled with hardware and productized for the growing Surgical Robotics market, rendering them inaccessible to underfunded hospital systems.

Our Nonprofit Mission

The decision to operate as a nonprofit was an intentional one. At the core of SDSC, is our vision for a future where surgeons are empowered by data to perform scientific study and focus on improving surgical care -unencumbered by external pressures from market conditions.
