AI development in healthcare is often focused on hospital operations and administrative tasks to drive profits. Many surgical AI systems today are bundled with expensive hardware for the surgical robotics market, making them only available to well-funded hospitals. At SDSC, we imagine a future where surgeons are empowered by data to conduct research and improve patient care, without the pressure of market demands. That’s why we’re a nonprofit—so our mission stays focused on our values, and our products remain as accessible as possible. To learn more about what drives us, check out this blog article.
- SDSC works with surgeons, engineers, and clinicians worldwide to create valuable analytics for surgical research and training. SVP, our in-house video platform, offers high-quality, generalizable insights that make it an all-in-one tool for improving surgical research, skills, and outcomes.
- SDSC also partners with organizations like Stanford University and NeuroKids to offer specialized features. These include custom networks within SVP for better collaboration and training on procedures, and live AI analytics during cadaver dissections to provide more insights for learners.
- SVP also lets surgeons collaborate and get real-time feedback from colleagues worldwide. This shift from traditional one-on-one, in-person training opens up opportunities to share specialized knowledge across the surgical community.
SVP employs a rigorous training and evaluation workflow to ensure that our AI models effectively operate across different types of procedures, tools, and hospitals. We continuously iterate on our models, enhancing their performance and accuracy with every new version. This ongoing process helps us deliver reliable, high-quality, and relevant analytics for surgical training and assessment. Additionally, we have a model monitoring system in place that flags potential poor model performance, allowing us to address issues and improve our models as soon as possible. Our best-in-class engineering team plays a critical role in driving these innovations, ensuring that our AI solutions are continuously optimized and evolve to meet the highest standards.
We build everything at SDSC with privacy and security in mind. As a user of the platform, you get to choose the audience you want to share your surgical procedure data with. You can choose to keep it private, share it with specific individuals, members of your organization, or all platform users through the Platform Library. See our Privacy Policy for more information. Furthermore, SDSC has the right to use the data for ML training as per our Terms and Conditions.
SDSC is HIPAA and SOC2 compliant. We take data security and privacy seriously! Data is encrypted at rest and during transmission. We have built internal controls for limiting access to sensitive data, and have an extensive set of policies for ensuring your data is secure. For more information, check out our security page here.
In simple terms, users own their data, meaning they control who can see or interact with it. SDSC is a data processor, meaning we handle the data on behalf of the user. However, as stated in our terms and conditions, SDSC has the right to use the data for machine learning training to improve our AI models. We also allow researchers to collect aggregate data (like statistics) for projects, but this data is anonymized and doesn’t identify individuals. You can read more in our terms and conditions here.
